Lust for life met Kath Wyatt

De eerste tekening van Danielle naar aanleiding van de muziek van Nick Drake is The Walk Away (2018). We zien Nicks bekende lange rijzige gestalte, zijn jas hangt een beetje vreemd om zijn schouders. Het is alsof we door hem heen kunnen kijken, alsof hij niet helemaal aanwezig is. Nick verbergt zijn gezicht achter zijn enorme handen terwijl hij wegloopt van een fonkelend licht. Het licht dat op hetzelfde moment ook uit zijn eigen gezicht straalt.
Er zijn maar weinig tekeningen van Danielle waarop Nicks gezicht te zien is. Danielle: “De wereld van Nick is een magische wereld, vol schoonheid en melancholie. Ik ben heel voorzichtig in het afbeelden van Nick. Hij heeft voor mij een soort heiligheid. Totdat ik Kath Wyatt op de Drakeheads tegenkwam. Zij tekent Nick zoals ik dat nooit zou durven: naakt in bad compleet met badeendjes, met een meid op schoot, op een kerstkaart met een olijke kerstmuts op. Haar tekeningen zijn heel direct getekend, met een grote liefde voor haar onderwerp. Alles is heel zorgvuldig uitgewerkt, met een toewijding die je ook ziet in hoe de Engelsen hun tuin onderhouden, heel nauwgezet. Kath doet daar dan nog een dikke dot humor bovenop. De ‘lust for life’ die in haar tekeningen zit, vind ik prachtig.”

Er ontstaat een soort openbare vriendschap tussen Danielle en Kath. Ze reageren op elkaars tekeningen, steunen elkaar bij teleurstellingen, en openen samen de jacht op Nick Drake-souvenirs verzamelobjecten van Nick. Kath leeft met haar man, poezen en kippen in Whitefield, een klein stadje onder de rook van Manchester. Ze deelt haar tekeningen met de Drakeheads en op haar Instagram. Een aantal tekeningen is ook te zien in de tentoonstelling in Stedelijk Museum Breda, waaronder Don’t be shy, you’ll learn to fly. We zien hier Nick op een vliegend tapijt, zijn haar wapperend in de wind, en met een bescheiden tevreden glimlach op zijn gezicht. Kath: “Nick’s journey has come full circle and he rides the colourful blanket symbolic of his former life (it featured in an early photoshoot with his friend Julian Lloyd). Now he literally has the world at his feet, and his once-sinister Pink Moon forms a glowing nimbus behind his head.”

Het afgelopen jaar, wanneer ook Engeland in lockdown gaat, begint Kath met het ontwerpen van een volledig Tarot kaartspel met tekeningen van Nick. Ook maakt ze een albumcover voor het vierde, nooit voltooide album van Nick en tekent ze een eerbetoon aan een van haar andere muzikale helden: David Bowie. Ik vroeg Kath om iets meer te vertellen over haar tekeningen.

Kath: “This image is a watercolour painting of the Four of Cups, for a Nick-themed tarot I designed last year. I've always been fascinated by the tarot - the beauty of the images, and the interpretations, the way they tell stories. I used the designs to, in some way, tell aspects of Nick's story, as well as to express my own feelings about him and his music, and how much it has helped me. The suit of Cups stands for emotion and creativity, so it perfectly represents Nick. Four of Cups stands for boredom and apathy. I based the design on a photo by Keith Morris of Nick slumped at a table, staring past a coffee cup. In my version there are three cups of coffee on the table, all left to go cold, while a disembodied hand on his right proffers him a fresh, steaming cup, which he ignores, or can't see. I think, like many artists, Nick reached a point of feeling stuck, unable either to enjoy what was in front of him or to take advantage of opportunities that were offered. It's a situation I can stronglysympathise with!”

Kath: “This is a design for Nick Drake's fourth album, the one that he recorded half of before he died. Among his papers there was a list of eight songs: the first four, Voices, Black Eyed Dog, Rider On The Wheel, and Hanging On A Star, all had ticks next to them, indicating they had been recorded. The remaining four, Saw You On A Starship, Old Fairy Tale, Even Now, and Long Way To Town, only exist as lyrics - we don't know what they would have sounded like! I have loved science-fiction all my life, so I was intrigued by a song about starships. I referenced Nick's sister Gabrielle's famous role as Lt Ellis in UFO, lending Nick her space suit helmet! Against a glorious nebula, Nick gazes wide-eyed at the starship which we can see reflected in his visor. There's a reflection of a pink moon, too."

Kath: “If songs were lines in a conversation...” the French singer Françoise Hardy wanted Nick to write some songs for her. Nick’s producer Joe Boyd arranged a meeting, but poor Nick was struck dumb in Françoise’s presence, and the collaboration never happened. But if it had, what might it have looked like? I enjoyed drawing Nick and Françoise strolling by the Seine on a blustery autumn day. Nick, of course, seems to be paying more attention to his Disque Bleu than to the beautiful woman on his arm. Kath: “This is a sketch made with ink and watercolour brush pens, of Nick sporting the Aladdin Sane lightning bolt. I adore Nick, but I only discovered him fairly recently, while Bowie was the soundtrack to my teens. Well it was David's birthday, and I wanted to combine a tribute to two wonderful artists whose music has meant so much to me. That's it! Nothing more deep and meaningful than that. I was a bit worried about how people would react - particularly the Nick fans - but most reactions were positive. In my opinion, both David and Nick produced a body of work that transcends fashion and time, despite being almost polar opposites in terms of style and personality. I like to think they would have respected each other had they met.”
